A Google Business Profile audit is a structured review of your listing’s accuracy, usefulness, and available evidence. The result should be a list of specific findings and next steps, rather than a score with no explanation.

This article’s recommended method separates customer-facing problems from longer-term improvements. You can use it yourself or ask a provider to follow it before proposing paid work.

Begin with the public customer experience
Find your business by name and open the public profile. Record the review date and the profile link. Compare what is displayed with the information your business currently approves.

Business identity: does the name match your real-world branding?
Location: is the address or service area accurate?
Availability: do hours and exceptions reflect current operations?
Contact: do the phone and website links lead to the right business?
Offer: do the description and service details explain what you actually do?
Use Google’s representation guidelines to evaluate naming, categories, location, and hours. Record policy questions separately from ordinary editing tasks.

Write findings that someone can act on
A useful finding contains the observation, evidence, proposed correction, and person responsible. “Improve your profile” is too broad to assign or verify.

Hypothetical finding: “The public profile shows Sunday opening, but the owner confirms Sunday closure. Save the approved schedule, update the hours, and check the public display afterward.” This is an example of documentation, not a claim about any real business.

For links, record both the destination and the problem. For photos, name the missing view you want to add. For descriptions, identify the outdated wording instead of recommending a rewrite without a reason.

Prioritize corrections by customer impact
Our suggested order is:

First: access or policy issues. Resolve questions about who can manage the profile or whether the listing accurately represents the business before making speculative changes.
Next: customer barriers. Correct a wrong phone number, misleading hours, or a broken destination link.
Then: clarity. Review categories, services, descriptions, and useful photos.
Finally: ongoing maintenance. Assign a review routine, a content plan, and a date to check completed work.
This is an editorial prioritization method. It does not predict how much traffic a correction will generate.

Keep public checks separate from private performance data
Google says Business Profile performance requires access to the account associated with the profile. Its “Calls” metric counts clicks on the call button, while website clicks count clicks on the website link. Neither is a count of paying customers. Source: Google’s performance documentation.

Ask an auditor to label what was publicly observed and what came from authorized owner data. If private data was unavailable, the report should say so rather than estimate it as fact.

Where data is available, compare the same measures over clearly identified periods. Add your own inquiry and sales records to investigate whether those interactions led to useful business outcomes. Note promotions, closures, or other changes that complicate the comparison.

Question unexplained scores and ranking promises
If a tool gives a score, ask what it measures, which information it used, and what the score cannot establish. Use the underlying findings to choose work.

Turn the audit into a short action list
Choose a few documented tasks, approve the changes, and verify the result. Keep unresolved items visible instead of declaring the whole profile “fixed.”
